A Visionary Transforming Jamaica’s Entertainment Sector

John Swaby stands as a transformative force in the Jamaican entertainment industry, renowned for his innovative contributions and unwavering commitment to excellence. As the founder of John Swaby Entertainment, he has redefined audio-visual and event production in Jamaica, leaving an indelible mark that continues to resonate across the industry.

 

John's journey began in 1971 when he joined the film crew at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation. It was here that he developed essential skills and gained invaluable experience in media production, igniting a passion for the entertainment sector that would propel him to new heights. His early work as a sound engineer at Harry J Recordings saw him collaborating with reggae legends Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, helping to produce iconic sounds that defined a generation.

A particularly historic moment in John’s career came when he was part of the crew that captured the legendary One Love Peace Concert in 1978. This remarkable event, headlined by Bob Marley, aimed to promote peace and unity in a nation grappling with political turmoil.


As Marley joined hands with rival political leaders Michael Manley and Edward Seaga during the performance of 'Jamming', John’s camera immortalized a powerful message of hope and unity for the people of Jamaica. John's knack for capturing magic extended to the international stage as well. He filmed the collaboration between Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger for the iconic song '(You Gotta Walk) Don't Look Back,' a performance that dazzled audiences during its debut on Saturday Night Live in 1978. Furthermore, his work took him to Africa, where he filmed for the United Nations and various NGOs, showcasing his versatility and commitment to storytelling through media.

 

Making history as the first person in Jamaica to own a stage, John Swaby revolutionized event planning and production. This ground-breaking move empowered performers and event organizers to create unforgettable experiences that captivated audiences. His visionary approach established new industry standards, fostering an environment of creativity and professional excellence that has become a hallmark of Jamaican entertainment.

John has been a key player in major events since their inception, including Reggae Sumfest and Jamaica’s Jazz and Blues Festival, further solidifying his pivotal role in shaping the entertainment landscape.
