From Steering Wheels to Camera Reels
Milton Reid, affectionately known as 'Reidy,' hails from the serene Woodhall District of Clarendon, where his early life laid the groundwork for an extraordinary career. After completing his education at Woodhall Primary School and then the Spanish Town Comprehensive High School, Milton Reid’s journey took an unexpected turn when he became a taxi driver. It was during this time that he had a chance meeting with Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange—a renowned politician—who recognised his potential and encouraged him to seek employment with the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC).
Taking her advice, he applied and was successful. He initially began working as a driver for JBC, transporting employees from 10 PM to 6 AM. Little did he know that this role would serve as a launching pad for his future. Reidy would spend countless hours in the radio studio before it was time to transport the staff, nurturing his dreams of becoming a radio technical operator.
His dedication did not go unnoticed; after a year, he was assigned by JBC's then General Manager, Gloria Lannaman, to start transporting the news crew going out on assignment. This provided him with a unique opportunity. He was introduced to the world of electronic news gathering (ENG) and camera operations by observing the team during various assignments.
He immersed himself in the craft and quickly transitioned to the role of cameraman in 1985. Over the years, Reid's talent flourished as he worked with prestigious organisations like CVM and TVJ, capturing compelling stories across the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. His fearless approach has seen him navigate hostile environments, often covering shootouts and demonstrations, always prioritising not only his safety but also that of his crew.
Despite the high demands and long hours of his profession, Milton Reid’s commitment to his family remains unwavering. He often emphasises that family comes first, and it is this personal touch that endears him to those around him. With a warm smile and an approachable demeanour, 'Reidy' is known for his generosity and humility. His annual tradition of feeding the elderly in his community each Christmas serves as a testament to his character and his belief in giving back.
One of Reid’s most profound contributions lies in his dedication to mentoring aspiring cameramen, some of whom are gainfully employed in television stations outside of Jamaica. He passionately encourages them to stay focused, learn the intricacies of their craft, and treat everyone with respect—values that he holds near and dear.
As Milton Reid continues his journey in the world of visual storytelling, he embodies a spirit of resilience, generosity, and warmth. His legacy is not merely defined by the stories he captures through his lens, but also by the inspiration he imparts to those who illuminate the world through their cameras. In every frame, his story continues to unfold—one of passion, determination, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.
