A Pillar of Jamaican Journalism

Ulric Dingham Simmonds, a dedicated member of the Gleaner editorial staff since January 3, 1939, was a prominent figure in Jamaican journalism. Renowned for his incisive coverage of parliamentary proceedings, Simmonds established himself as the foremost parliamentary reporter and columnist for the Gleaner, where he honed his skills in the art of storytelling that transcended mere reporting. His contribution to Jamaican literature is equally noteworthy, with his short story, "Grannie Bell," reflecting the rich tapestry of cultural identity through the lens of community strength and the significance of remembering one's past.

Throughout his illustrious career, Simmonds garnered recognition for his outstanding work, being one of the first recipients of the Press Association of Jamaica’s Seprod Outstanding News Story Award in 1964. After decades of impactful reporting, he took on a leadership role at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), first as head of the newsroom in 1987 and later as general manager in 1988. During his tenure, he adeptly navigated the challenges posed by Hurricane Gilbert, solidifying his reputation as a steadfast leader in the face of adversity.

Simmonds’ legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of Hansard reporting in Jamaica, as he was among a pioneering group of reporters who expertly documented parliamentary sessions. His commitment to excellence in journalism and the preservation of Jamaican culture through both print and broadcast media has left an indelible mark, making Ulric Simmonds a revered figure in the chronicles of Jamaican history.
