A Respected Voice in Jamaica’s Media Evolution

Dr. Carmeta Blake, a stalwart in Jamaica’s broadcasting industry, has shaped the media landscape with her compelling voice and dedication to communication. Hailing from Kingston and a proud graduate of Titchfield High School, Dr. Blake's journey into media began in 1969 when she took her first steps as a Steno/Typist in the Sales Department of the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC). This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a career that would span decades and numerous roles in journalism and media production.

From an early age, Dr. Blake was captivated by the art of elocution, inspired by her primary school teacher, Mrs. Pearson. Although her initial aspiration was to become a teacher, those around her recognised her potential as a broadcaster and encouraged her to explore this path. This encouragement led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication at the University of the West Indies’ Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC). This foundational education allowed her to hone her skills and, in 1981, she graduated with honours, having secured first place in radio production—a testament to her talent and commitment.

Dr. Blake's broadcasting career flourished during her time at JBC, where she transitioned from a sales position to various production roles. While still a full-time teacher, she seized opportunities at the JBC during summer breaks, gaining invaluable experience that would serve her well in the future. Her significant break came when she was hired by Tony Robinson of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) to do live links on JBC TV, the only television station in Jamaica at the time. This opportunity solidified her place in the media landscape, leading her to Radio Antilles in Montserrat, where she further developed her skills in journalism.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Blake has been recognised for her outstanding contributions to the media. She received the Press Association Award for Best Human Interest Story and was honoured with the Rotary International Scholar Award for Journalism. These accolades are a testament to her unwavering commitment to quality journalism and her ability to connect with audiences through powerful storytelling.

Dr. Blake's milestones extend beyond personal achievements; she has had the privilege of meeting influential figures from various walks of life, enriching her perspective and understanding of the world. Her experiences have not only shaped her career but also contributed to her view on the evolution of Jamaica’s broadcasting landscape. She remarks on the substantial growth she has witnessed over the years, observing a more diverse industry rife with opportunities for aspiring media professionals.

In conclusion, Dr. Carmeta Blake stands as a beacon of inspiration in Jamaica's media landscape. Her journey from a young elocutionist to a revered broadcaster underscores the power of passion and perseverance. With her extensive experience and commitment to excellence, Dr. Carmeta Tate Blake continues to influence future generations, championing the importance of media in shaping narratives and fostering understanding in society. Her legacy is one of empowerment, paving the way for a more vibrant and inclusive media landscape in Jamaica and beyond.
