Respected Jamaican Journalist and Broadcaster
Meet Cliff Hughes—a name that resonates with authority, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the truth in Jamaican journalism. From humble beginnings to becoming one of the most respected figures in the media landscape, Hughes’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience and passion.
From Humble Origins to Media Mogul
Growing up in challenging circumstances, Hughes experienced first hand the obstacles that life can throw at you. His dreams of becoming a lawyer were dashed, but that did not deter him. Instead, he channeled his determination into a different path, securing a place among just 30 students out of 200 at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC).

With tenacity and grit, he dove into the world of radio, laying the foundation for an illustrious career. In 1986, he took his first steps into the broadcasting realm as a trainee announcer at RJR. Working the graveyard shift, he honed his craft, fuelled by a passion for storytelling and a desire to make a difference. He later found his niche in the sports department, showcasing his versatility and flair.
A Turning Point and a Voice for the Voiceless
The defining moment of Mr. Hughes’s career came in 2002 while hosting the acclaimed TV program 'Impact.' When the media sensationalized the story of Lee Boyd Malvo, a suspect in the Beltway sniper attacks, he decided to delve into the story. After rejecting the prevailing narrative of Lee Boyd Malvo being a 'typical Jamaican bad boy,' Mr Hughes and his team dug deeper, revealing the heartbreaking truth: Malvo was a gifted youth battered by poor parenting. Their findings became a viral sensation, turning into the award-winning documentary 'The Potter and the Clay.' The poignant storytelling caught the attention of FOX News, leading to a collaboration that showcased the raw, unfiltered truth. This trailblazing work ultimately earned Mr Hughes an Emmy Award, challenging skeptics who believed such accolades could only be achieved on American soil.

In acknowledgement of his unwavering dedication to media and communications in Jamaica, Cliff Hughes was awarded the prestigious Order of Distinction, Commander Class, in 2016. This accolade stands as a recognition of his significant impact on the media landscape and his unyielding fight for truth.
