Tuning into Care: The Transition from Broadcasting to Optician
In September of 1978, a young and ambitious Lloyd Holness stepped onto the vibrant stage of Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) as a trainee technical operator. Under the watchful eyes of mentors like Ossie Harvey and Harry Ashman, Lloyd’s passion for broadcasting ignited. His journey in the world of radio began, forever shaping his future.
Lloyd Holness recalls his first exhilarating on-air experience alongside the charismatic Fae Ellington on 'The Bamboo Lounge.' This opportunity marked the beginning of a remarkable five-year adventure through the heart of JBC’s broadcasting landscape. He was there for every major in-studio presentation, from the uplifting 'Morning Ride' to the late-night warmth of Charles Lewin’s 'The Love Machine.' Each show carved a unique chapter in Lloyd's life, filled with excitement and learning.

Among his fondest memories is the ground-breaking introduction of the FM broadcasting studio, JBC FM. As preparations unfolded, Lloyd was chosen for the prestigious technical operator certification training at the newly established Edna Manley Cultural Training Centre. It was a pivotal moment that not only polished his technical skills but also deepened his connection to the world of radio.
Throughout his time at JBC FM, Lloyd collaborated with some of the best in the business, including the charming Charles Hyatt. Together, they produced and edited memorable in-studio productions, creating content that resonated with audiences. One of Lloyd's personal highlights was his involvement in producing and presenting 'You Me and The Gospel Sounds,' a show that touched the hearts of many before he embarked on a new chapter of his life in 1993.
Fast forward to today, and Lloyd has transitioned from the world of radio to becoming a skilled optician in sunny Florida, USA. His affable demeanour, ability to connect with people and genuine care for his patients have made him a beloved figure in his community.
