A Strong Foundation in Education

Derby’s academic journey began at Knox College, where he nurtured a lifelong love for learning. He furthered his education at the University of Technology, formerly the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST). There, he studied Business Education in his pursuit of becoming a teacher. This solid foundation paved the way for a multifaceted career that merges education and media, allowing him to make profound impacts on Jamaican society.

A Dynamic Voice in Jamaican Broadcasting

Vernon Derby’s broadcasting career took flight at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) in the late 1970s. In 1977, he launched 'Derby’s Corner,' a compelling 5 commentary segment diving deep into societal issues. He also co-hosted 'Youth Rap,' a dynamic program that encouraged youth involvement in important discussions.

Additionally, he hosted a music show on Friday evening called 'Big Youth Horn of Plenty'. At JBC, Derby demonstrated his versatility through engaging radio dramas like 'The Fortunes of Floralee' and live outside broadcasts. His time in radio was transformative, helping him develop a keen understanding of communication and its power to influence public awareness on pressing matters.

Pioneering Community Advocacy

Derby’s passion for community advocacy is evident in his creation of the Citizens’ Initiative Organisation, an innovative entity that connected citizen associations and neighbourhood watches across Jamaica. This organisation became the first of its kind on the island, setting a vital benchmark for community collaboration and empowerment. He also ventured into the music sphere by founding 'Artistes For Change,' a collective that motivates dancehall and reggae artists to create uplifting content that speaks to social issues. Collaborating with talented artists like Rojjah, Tanice Morrison, Mackie Conscious, and Sam Carty, Derby has cultivated a vibrant movement aimed at healing and inspiring communities through music.

Empowering Youth through the Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Among his numerous contributions, Derby is especially proud of his role as the National Director of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award program. The initiative targeted young people aged 14 to 24. They were encouraged to get involved in community service, physical activities, and adventurous expeditions.

Participants in the program were taken on a transformative journey of personal development. By mentoring and guiding young individuals, Mr. Derby empowered them to reach their potential and contribute positively to society.

Enriching Lives Through Education and the Arts

Vernon Derby’s influence extended to both education and the arts. He founded the CAST Singers and has taught subjects ranging from music and drama to mathematics and life skills at Papine Secondary School.

His commitment to education culminated in his role as acting head of the business department, where he inspired countless students to embrace academic excellence. Derby’s artistic talents also shine through his stand-up comedy and pantomime performances, further showcasing his ability to engage and connect with diverse audiences.

A Dedicated Advocate for Consumer Rights

After a brief hiatus from the airwaves, Derby made a triumphant return to radio in 2008, joining Nationwide News. He tackled consumer issues head-on, educating the public and fostering informed discussions. Notably, he was the first radio announcer to feature representatives from the US Embassy on air to address immigration concerns, reflecting his commitment to transparency and public service. Currently, Vernon Derby hosts programs at Omega Radio, where he continues to advocate for consumer rights, ensuring that his voice remains a guiding force in the Jamaican media landscape.
