The First Telecine Operator & Master Controller of Jamaican TV
Before the vibrant tapestry of Jamaican television, before the dazzling displays that now grace our screens, there was a pioneer, a visionary, a man named Don Blades. In 1963, as the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) TV took its first tentative steps, Don Blades stepped into the role of its first telecine operator, etching his name into the nascent history of Jamaican broadcasting. He wasn't just the first; he was a trailblazer. One of the original four master controllers at the station, Don held the unique distinction of being the first trained locally. This was a testament to his innate talent and the burgeoning Jamaican spirit of innovation.
Don was more than just a technical operator; he was a multifaceted individual, a master of his craft, and a constant seeker of knowledge. His technical prowess and unwavering attention to detail earned him the respect of his peers. Always eager to expand his skillset, he embraced the training opportunities available at JBC, evolving into both a skilled sound engineer and a proficient camera operator.

He speaks fondly of his days navigating the heavy equipment of the early days of television. "Controlling and manoeuvering the 400-pound EMI studio camera with its bulky hydraulic pedestals was a workout in itself," he recalls, "and the mobile location cameras weighed over 200 pounds. Working at the National Stadium, for example, we had to lift those cameras and the heavy cables to the top of the Grand Stand, but we were young men then…fit and strong." He remembers those early days with a smile, highlighting the physicality and camaraderie that defined the era.
Don's contribution to the advancement of Jamaican television extended beyond his core roles. In the late seventies, he played a vital role in the critical transition from the British PAL (Phased Alternating Lines) system to the American NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) system, a pivotal moment that aligned the country's broadcasting with American standards.
Don Blades' journey is a story of innovation, dedication, and the enduring spirit of a man who helped build the foundation of Jamaican television. He is a reminder of the pioneers who shaped the landscape of broadcasting in Jamaica and a testament to the transformative power of television. His legacy continues to resonate, inspiring future generations of broadcasters and reminding us of the rich history behind the screens we watch today.
