Trailblazer in Jamaican Broadcasting, Protocol and Logistics

Frank Merrick Needham is a trailblazing Jamaican journalist, broadcaster, and logistics expert who left an indelible mark on the nation's media landscape. With a storied career spanning over five decades, Mr. Needham's contributions to Jamaica's journalism, broadcasting, and protocol efforts have earned him international recognition and accolades.

 

Broadcasting Pioneer

Mr. Needham's remarkable journey began at ZQI Radio (later Radio Jamaica) in 1951, where he started as a teenager. By 1961, he joined the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) as Director of Programs and Production. His vision and leadership skills propelled him to the position of Assistant General Manager in 1962, where he oversaw the broadcast coverage of Jamaica's Independence celebrations. In 1966, Mr. Needham rose to the top as General Manager of the JBC, shaping the station's direction and cementing his legacy as a true broadcasting pioneer.

Protocol & Logistics Expert

Beyond his broadcasting achievements, Mr. Needham distinguished himself as a Protocol & Logistics Consultant, coordinating high-profile events in Jamaica. In 1990, he made history by organising the royal visit of HRH Ann, The Princess Royal, in support of the University of the West Indies. This remarkable feat earned him recognition as the first non-governmental individual to achieve this milestone. In 1994, he served as an advisor to Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke during Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Jamaica, collaborating with prominent figures such as Donald Davidson and Rear Admiral Peter Brady.

Awards & Accolades

For his exceptional service, Mr. Needham was acknowledged by the Queen with the title of Member of the Royal Victorian Order. This prestigious honour underscores his dedication to enhancing Jamaican media and celebrating the nation's rich cultural heritage.
