The Affable Voice That Warmed Jamaican Airwaves

Tony Young, widely known as 'TY', stands as a prominent figure in the landscape of Jamaican broadcasting. With a career spanning over three decades, Young's journey began in 1982 at JBC Radio North-East, a station that has since been transformed into IRIE-FM. His early work laid the foundation for a distinguished broadcasting career that would deeply resonate with listeners across Jamaica.


Young rose to national prominence after transferring to JBC Radio One, situated on South Odeon Avenue in Kingston. Partnering with Marlene Stephenson-Dalley, he took to the airwaves in the early morning slot, captivating audiences with his lively personality and magnetic voice. The duo quickly became a beloved fixture in the lives of many Jamaicans, leaving an indelible mark on the country's broadcasting history.

In 1997, as JBC Radio and TV transitioned to new ownership under the RJR Communications Group, Young embraced new opportunities as the founding general manager of ROOTS-FM, a station owned by Mustard Seed. His innovative leadership and creative vision were instrumental in establishing ROOTS-FM as a vital player in the Jamaican media sphere, showcasing his ability to adapt and thrive in a continuously changing industry.

In 2002, Young joined KLAS-FM, initially serving as a freelance announcer. By 2004, he transitioned into a full-time role coinciding with the station's shift towards a sports-focused format. His extensive knowledge and love for sports greatly contributed to KLAS-FM’s transformation into a premier destination for sports enthusiasts in Jamaica, solidifying his status as a key player in the field.

Renowned for his distinctive voice and eclectic musical selections, Tony Young's contributions to radio were profound. His broadcasts not only entertained but also fostered a sense of community among listeners, bridging generational divides.
